Your feet don't get the respect that they should. Most people take them very much for granted until they start to hurt. Heel pain in Asheville, NC, can cause you to hesitate to participate in your normal day-to-day activities. Dr. Douglas Milch  provides the podiatric care that can help you get back on your feet as quickly as possible.

Causes of heel pain in Asheville, NC

The most common cause of heel pain is plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a strong band of tissue that runs from the heels to the base of the toes. It holds up the arch in the foot and is essential to the function of the foot when you are walking or running. It also serves as a shock absorber. When it becomes inflamed, there may be sharp aching pain in the bottom of the foot near the edge of the heel. For many people, the pain is worse in the morning or if you have been sitting and go to get up. In most cases, plantar fasciitis is a result of overuse from repeated strain.

Another common cause of heel pain is Achilles tendonitis. This is an inflammation of the Achilles tendon which connects the calf and the back of the heel. This can happen if the tendon is overstretched, such as when it has to cover a heel spur, or when it has been overused.

If your feet turn too far inward while walking, this is called excessive pronation. This can cause an excessive amount of stretch on the ligaments and tendons that are located on the bottom of the foot and heel. When they are overstretched, it causes pain.

Treatment options

Icing on the heel can help prevent inflammation. Taking an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory can help with the pain.  If you are not improving, it is time to go to the podiatrist.  The podiatrist may want to get an x-ray of your foot to determine if the problem is in the bone. Exercises that gently stretch the plantar fascia may be recommended to strengthen it. Shoe inserts may be prescribed.
